The cover of darkness is denied to an enemy armored column by a U.S. Army AH-1S Cobra firing M-257 Standoff Illuminating Flares produced by Thiokol Propulsion. Each flare produces one million candlepower during its 120 second burn time and provides the required illumination for the Cobra to make night attacks with a variety of optically sighted ordnance. In this hypothetical combat situation, the AH-1 serves a the flare ship for other attacking Cobras. |
